Over the decades AI has been influenced by a number of seminal characters who have hugely impacted its direction and below I present some of them. Some of the well-known ones are BERT, and opengPT-3 developed by OpenAI. GPT-3, which has 175 billion parameters fills this gap by being one of the most accurate natural language processing models (NLP) due to it's ability to generate human-like text at an unprecedented level. This is a great example of how powerful AI models can be across such wide spectrum applications, from creative stuff like writing to customer-care automation!
Another major player in the history of AI is IBM's Watson. Watson Wins the Quiz Show "Jeopardy!" made 2011 a watershed year, demonstrating the system's power to handle natural language and answer complex questions at high accuracy. The triumphs of Watson demonstrated the power artificial intelligence had over language comprehension and ascertaining information, which further led to its usage in industries such as Healthcare or Finance. For example, Watson Health hopes to help doctors diagnose diseases and customize treatment options.
Google's DeepMind made waves as well after using deep reinforcement learning to beat the world champion of Go, Lee Sedol, with their AlphaGo program. This marked a monumental moment in AI, demonstrating the ability of artificial intelligence to strategize and offer decision-making support for some challenges which were formerly too difficult for machines. This victory also made bounds and leaps in researching reinforcement learning, which is used to resolve other difficult problems across different subject areas.
We are using services like virtual assistants and asking queries to Apple Siri or Amazon Alexa in your daily life, all of which utilize AI technologies for user communication. Introduced in 2011 and launched a few years later, Siri (left) and Alexa are among the AIs you speak to that use language processing to chat with speakers. By 2023, there will be more than half a billion smart speakers in use around the world as AI-powered assistants including Siri and Alexa seep into people's homes and businesses.
Yann LeCun, the Chief AI Scientist at Meta and a titan in artificial intelligence research and development Also known for his groundbreaking research on convolutional neural networks, or CNNs — a field that has cemented much of the foundation for computer vision and our ability to train machines to accurately recognize and categorize images. His work has helped to make technologies utilized in self-driving cars, diagnostic tests for cancer and other diseases.
Rest assured, tech-influencers like Coursera co-founder Andrew Ng have made their mark in the AI landscape. Ng popularized his conventional expertise by offering online courses on related topics, democratizing the curriculum and helping to prepare a new generation of AI researchers.
The likes of these AI characters and technologies serve to emphasize the impact that AI can have when used across different industries. Their work has changed our understanding of what is possible with artificial intelligence — from improving human-computer interactions to propelling scientific discovery forward.
